Summary          Project TEC2011-25473

   University of Málaga, Spain

Funded by the Spanish Government and EU FEDER

Recent technological advances have ignited the interest in deploying wireless communications networks to transmit information through seas and lakes, without all the wired communications systems drawbacks. Such systems have applications in marine biology, oil extraction industry and military electronics. Physical nature of water as a wave propagation medium allows us to conclude that acoustic communication represents the most attractive option for such communication systems. However, electromagnetic waves have also been proposed for high speed underwater wireless transmission.

The associated channels for underwater acoustic communications (UAC) are probably one of the most hostile and complex communications channels. In fact, such hostility plus the significant difference between undersea environments imply that currently there is no universally accepted statistical UAC channel model. Otherwise, the channel for high speed underwater electromagnetic communications (UEC) has only been partially studied.

A new research program is started with this project on characterization and modeling of UAC/UEC channels, including a further investigation on the more appropriate transmission techniques for such channels. This program has a three years duration (2012-2014) and it is funded by the Spanish Government and European Union (EU) FEDER.

The goals of this project are the following:

· Characterization and measurement of UAC/UEC channels.
· Proposals for statistical or mixture (geometrical ans statistical) models for the measured UAC/UEC channels.
· Research on high speed transmission techniques for UAC/UEC channels.
· Development of experimental systems for data transmission over UAC/UEC channels.

Sociedad Anónima de Electrónica Submarina (SAES) is an important company in the underwater electronic sector which is interested in the potential results of the proposed research program.
